Inside Athena: Tremont’s Business Office Manager Helping Families Through the Process

WAREHAM, M.A. — Maria Sherman knows there is more to her role as Business Office Manager than just managing the monetary aspects of The Tremont Rehabilitation and Skilled Care Center.
She originally joined the team in 1985 and then left for a few years before returning in 1991.
“I didn’t start out as the Office Manager. I started off in the kitchen washing dishes, then I became a cook, then I became medical records, and then I became the Office Manager,” she said. “I don’t believe in moving around. I just believe in moving up in the place that you’re in if you’re able to.”
In her position, she helps with billing, collections, and other areas pertaining to the finances. She also helps the office at Cape Regency Rehabilitation & Skilled Care Center in Centerville with any questions they may have and helps train new hires.
Beyond the work she does with the team, she also works closely with the families of residents.
“We definitely do provide a big service,” she said. “As for some facilities, they would not do an application for a family. They would just send them off to a company to have the application done. But we take the time to sit with them and go through the application and we submit everything for them.”
For many families, the move of a loved one into a nursing home may be their first encounter with this type of healthcare. Sherman wants them to know that she is there to help guide them in the process.
“I just feel like we provide a bigger role in helping families with knowing what insurances to pick and helping them with MassHealth,” she said.
Sherman has found a place of work that surrounds her with a team worth staying for. She said they are like “family” to her, which is the most important thing.
“I have had the pleasure of working with Maria for many years. She is one of the hardest-working people I know,” Scott Nickerson, Administrator, said. “She is both knowledgeable and a perfectionist. She is self-driven and always gives her all. It is an absolute pleasure to have Maria as a member of our team, she is irreplaceable.”
