Five Things You Did Not Know About Social Workers

Webster’s dictionary defines social work as, “any of various professional services, activities, or methods concretely concerned with the investigation, treatment, and material aid of the economically, physically, mentally, or socially disadvantaged.” Social workers are an asset to many people and areas of work.

Here are five things you might not know about a social worker:

  1. When you think of a social worker, you might think that social workers only exist as part of the Department of Children and Families (DCF). This is not true. Social workers work in schools, hospitals, private practices, with veterans, and human service agencies. Various social workers work with us here at Athena and keep things running smoothly.
  2. Social workers help people in all different stages of life. Where typically you might see social workers portrayed helping just children in television shows, social workers help children, elderly, and everyone in-between.
  3. Social workers do not have a regular 9 to 5 job. Often their work requires working late nights, weekends, and holidays in addition to court appointments and meeting families at home.
  4. March is National Social Work Month! There are nearly 700, 000 social workers in the United States alone. March is the month to give them the recognition they deserve.
  5. Social work is one of the fastest growing jobs in the United States. Nearly every corporation needs the help of a social worker!

March is National Social Work Month which is the perfect time to give extra recognition to the social workers at your school, workplace, or home that help you achieve greatness.
