Inside Athena: Director of Admissions Connecting People to Care at Marlborough Hills

MARLBOROUGH, M.A. — Maureen Barney will be celebrating 10 years at Marlborough Hills Rehabilitation & Health Care Center this November. She is the Director of Admissions at the center and helps thousands of state residents find short-term rehab placement or long-term care.

“This is definitely my passion,” Barney said. “Some people like working with children, but I love the older generations. It’s been great.”

Barney enjoys being that person who serves as the connection between the hospitals and the potential residents looking for care options.

When a new resident is admitted, she said, “I introduce myself that I am one of the people that got you from the hospital to here and now we’re going to help you.”

Barney also holds her CNA license as she found it was important to her to have the skills of a CNA when she is meeting new admissions if there is something they need help with at that moment, like repositioning in bed or helping with assistance to the bathroom.

While Marlborough Hills is primarily a skilled nursing center, it also offers vital support services for individuals with substance use disorders. Barney takes pride in serving this community, giving hope and a second chance to those who may not have had one.

Looking back on her tenure at the center, she credits the teamwork and her colleagues.

“I can’t say enough about the management team that we have here,” Barney said. “We have a great bunch of people here. When I have a problem, they have a problem, and I love that I can turn to my co-workers and I can get help when needed.”
