Athena Home Health & Hospice Volunteer Given Statewide Award

FARMINGTON, C.T. — Carl Thomas, a volunteer with Athena Home Health & Hospice in Connecticut, has been honored with the 2025 Florence Wald Volunteer Award for Excellence in End-of-Life Care, given by the Connecticut Association for Healthcare at Home.

“Carl devotes the majority of his weeks to volunteering with our hospice patients and those in long-term care facilities. As a Vietnam veteran, Carl’s mission is to share his story and offer support and outreach to anyone in need during his time with Athena. He serves as a true advocate for compassion, comfort, and dignity, touching the lives of every patient he encounters,” the team wrote in his nomination. “His dedication knows no limits.”

According to the association, Florence Ward opened the first hospice in the U.S. in 1971 in Connecticut and was a pioneer in improving the care for those at the end of their life.
